Keynote Speech: TELL: From Resources to Thinking Skills
Speaker: A. Gumawang Jati (ITB)
Summary:
            Pak Gumawang started his speech by quoting Herold (2016) saying that the presence of internet the development of IT have influenced the way students learn. ICT have impacted the teaching in and learning process largely on classroom practice and the selected materials. He highlighted valuable resources of teaching and learning process available from the internet.
In the second half of his speech, the speaker introduced some sites and apps that can be used in language learning such as Robin, Canva, Essay Grader, Kahoot, and many more, and how some apps can be elaborated in classroom practice. He also demonstrated how to use the apps and the features that they have. He said they he had not tried all of apps particularly for the teaching and learning process so he challenged the audience to think about how to use them in teaching language.


Plenary 1: TPACK: The Concept and Practice in the Classroom
Speaker: DR. Nur Arifah Drajati, M.Pd. (UNS)
Summary:
            The speaker started the presentation by highlighting the increasing growth of technology that recently happens and how it can give new insights to teachers in developing their teaching and learning process in the classroom.
            However, incorporating technology in the TL process is challenging for teachers. According to Mishra and Koehler (2006), there is still lack of space for teachers to use technology in the classroom. The speaker highlighted that pedagogical and content knowledge are needed in the language TL process. According to the speaker, TPACK is a framework of integrating technology in language learning.
            From her presentation, it implies that the use of technology in language learning based on TPACK framework can motivate the teachers and make them more confident, help teachers to design their lesson, and motivate the students as well.


Pleanary 2: Cyber Bullying & Child Protection
Speaker: Riezky Novyana (British Council, Jakarta)
Summary:
            It is obvious that the rapid growth of information technology give advantages to internet users especially to young people (millennial) who feel safer, more confident, and more comfortable using online interactions than the offline ones. However, just like a coin, IT developments also brings inevitable risks to the users.
There were three videos played during the presentation to illustrate how digital world can endanger young people. The speaker showed us a video about how a magician could know everything about his clients’ life. It was not about the magical power he had but it was because social media. There was also video about a teenage school who at first felt happy as she was getting popular due to her posts in social media but the happiness turned into bad feeling where all people knew everything about her even about the most private thing. Another video he played was the one about Amanda Tod, a teenager who cut herself because of getting bullied. These videos show that online interactions can make young people or teenagers particularly millennial and Gen Z exposed to digital dangers.
Therefore, the awareness of digital dangers and privacy breach should be raised in order to safeguard our children from cyber bully and other negative impacts of digital threads.


Parallel 1: Tape Me and I Learn More
Presenter: Itje Chodidjah
Summary:
In her public speaking class, Bu Itje find some problems such as lack of time, various levels of students, meek behaviour, problematic syllabus, and low students motivation. Considering this problems she decided to use video recording activitity.
The speaker asked their students of public speaking class to record their performance in the form of video. This activity was conducted outside the class. They listened to their own record and repeated recording when it’s necessary. When they came back, they had a discussion in groups or pairs to evaluate the performance. They asked for feedbacks to each other and repeated recording again based on the feedbacks.
The result of this activity is satisfying in a way that the students improve their performance in public speaking. They speak more fluently and confidently, use gesture and filler effectively, and make more informative and clear speech. The speaker also emphasized that technology is just a tool. Don’t teach the students about technology. Instead, think about how to help students to achieve the learning objective.


Paraller 2: VOA Learning English as an Extensive Listening Resource for Lower Proficiency Students
Presenter: Hasti Rahmaningtyas (Universitas Negeri Malang)
Summary:
            The presenter first highlighted the importance of extensive listening for language development. However, there is not enough exposure of listening in the target language, which is English. When there is lack input or exposure, how can students improve their listening skill? This issue led the presenter to conduct a study on using English learning website as students’ resource in developing their listening skill. VOA was used by the presenter in her study. Students used VOA for extensive listening outside the class. Questionnaire and journal weekly entries were used to collect the data about students’ learning experiences as well as their perspective of using the website.
            The result of her study shows that students were happy with the listening activities because they could choose the materials that suited their interests and proficiency levels. They found that learning from VOA Learning English was useful to enrich their world knowledge and improve their vocabulary mastery.

Paraller 3: EFL Classroom Practices for Young Learners by Using MALL: What and How do We Teach to Hook Them on Learning
Presenter: Vitha Ama Matuate (Sanata Dharma University)

Summary:
            The presenter used Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) for her students considering that nowadays mobile technology has become an integral part in students’ daily activities. Mobile devices are used by students to fulfill many of their basic needs such as doing school assignments, socializing with friends, and simply playing games to have fun. That is why as a teacher, the presenter thinks that it’s necessary to relate the students’ enthusiasm in using mobile device to the educational context. In her study, FUN ENGLISH app was used.
The subject of her research is elementary students in Yogyakarta from three different grades; grade 1, 2, and 3. The finding shows that the use of FUN ENGLISH as the mobile app integrated in the learning process can improve the motivation of most students. Compared to traditional way of teaching, she said that that using mobile phones in the classroom practice is more enjoyable and convenient.


Paraller 4: The Implementation of Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) in ELT Practice in Higher Education: Students’ Perspectives
Presenter: Anisatul Kariman (UPI)
Summary:

Due to the rapid growth of technology, it is inevitable that IT will interfere all aspects of life including education. In other words technology cannot be separated from classroom practice. That is why the presenter thinks that teacher should embrace the use of technology in their thinking process. Moreover, most of students have their own advanced gadget. The presenters conducted a case study to find out the concept of BYOD in English language teaching practice particularly related to the use of laptops and smartphones in the classroom. The participants of the study were a teacher of college level who implemented the concept in his classroom and students from two of the teacher’s distinguished class. Online questionnaires were distributed followed by online interviews to 3 students and the teacher,
The result of the study shows that the students felt more convenient during the activities. They found the use of their smartphone in writing activities was helpful. However, some barries also occured, for example, when they had low battery or when the connectedn was down.  


Paraller 5: The Development of Students’ Critical Thinking in the Form of Writing by Using Quora as an English Learning Platform
Presenter: Astrid Daneshwari (Tidar University)
Summary:

            The presenter first discussed about the incredible change of technology development and how it gave impact to English learning. Then she introduced as a social medium that can be used to learn English called Quora. She claimed that Quora was one of the most helpful platform where the users could share knowledge by creating question to initiate and stimulate discussion. Therefore, she conducted a research to find out the development of students’ critical thinking and their writing comprehension by creating discussion in Quora. The result of the study is that students feel more confident in delivering their ideas in the discussion.


Workshop 1: A Small Step to Unpacking Students’ Design Thinking Skill in Language Class
Presenter: Finita Ari (UPI)
Summary:

            The workshop aims to demonstrate how Design Thinking Skill (DTS) can be fostered in the classroom using various learning activities. Bu Finita started the workshop by asking the audiences to act as if they were students. There are five stages applied to activate DTS of the students. They are emphasize, define, ideation, prototype, and test. For the first step, an interesting and inspiring video about the condition of Citarum River was played. Then after watching the video, students were asked about their opinion about the video. Next, students were asked to create a tag in group and post it Padlet. Then the speaker asked the students to draw students’ idea on a piece of paper. Based on the idea, students were asked to make a poster using Canva.
            From the workshop, I can learn that activities involving DTS can helps students to think participate in relevant discussion while designing their own way in innovating and creating.critically and use the language actively. Moreover, the activities give students opportunity to

Workshop 2: Marrying Online Project-Based Language Learning with Sutori
Presenter: Desy Indriana (UMY) and Sheila Anjarani (UMP)
Summary:

            The presenters started the workshop by talking about the background of using online project-based language learning. They said that students in this digital era were expected to produce effective written communication and to be technologically literate. This objective could be achieved when they got support from teachers and did plenty of practices. They added that the classical way of teaching writing could demotivate students because most of them found it boring. The presenters highlighted that the use of technology could benefit the students.
            In the workshop, the presenters introduced us Sutori application. It is one among many widely available applications that can be used to assist students in the teaching and learning process. It is a tool specially designed for creating interactive writings. The application provides options to craft multimedia projects, create text links, and generate multiple choice questions. So, during the workshop, the presenter shows the audience how to use the apps particularly about the process and procedure on how teachers can incorporate this app for teaching. In addition, some possible tasks and activities were also explored.


Conclusion: It was really a great conference. I could learn a lot from all speakers and presenters of the conference. They gave me valuable insights that motivated me to learn more about technology and try to explore it more to my classroom. It was also fun to meet new colleagues and share ideas with them. Overall, the conference is very helpful for me as teacher and student.
